What is Reflexology?

The ancient healing tradition of working on the feet to effect the rest of the body has been known to man for many thousands of years. It was practiced in India, China, and Egypt as early as 2,500 B.C.

Modern Reflexology is an art of stress reduction based on the work of two American physicians, Dr. William Fitzgerald and Dr. Joe Shelby Riley in the 1920's. Reflexology, utilizing specific manual techniques, is a therapy based on the unique relationship of the feet to referred areas of the entire anatomy and appears to work through the energy of the nervous, electrical, chemical, magnetic and subtle energy systems of the body. Reflexology reduces stress thereby causing physiological changes in the body.

What is the Scientific Basis of Reflexology?

In the 1890's, knighted research scientist, Dr. Henry Head proved there was a nuerological relationship between the skin and the internal organs.

Nobel prize winner, Sir Charles Sherrington proved that the whole nervous system and body adjusts to stimulus when it is applied to any part of the body. In Germany, Dr. Alfons Cornelius observed pressure to certain spots triggered muscle contractions, changes in blood pressure, variation in warmth and moisture in the body as well as directly affecting the 'psychic processes' or mental state of the patient.

How Can Reflexology Help You?
Reflexology can be used to restore and maintain the body's natural equilibrium and encourage self-healing. Many of our health problems can be linked to stress. Reflexology is primarily a relaxation technique. The relaxation process activates the body's own incredible recuperative ability. Following illness, stress, injury or disease, the body is in a state of "imbalance", with nerve and vital energy pathways blocked, preventing the body from functioning effectively. Reflexology negates the effects of stress and gently nudges the body towards better functioning through the relaxation process.

Who Can Benefit From Reflexology?
The therapy is suitable for all ages. Since Reflexology focuses on the whole person, not the symptoms of the disease, most people benefit from treatment. Once your body is balanced, it is wise to have regular sessions in order to help maintain health and well-being. An increasing number of people are incorporating this safe, natural therapy as a way of relaxing, balancing and harmonizing the body.
